The Taraba State Government has activated flood evacuation and relocation plans in vulnerable and riverine communities across the state as part of measures to protect lives and property ahead of the anticipated flooding.
The move, announced under the administration of Governor Agbu Kefas, follows flood predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and is being coordinated through the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA).
TSEMA has commenced a statewide sensitisation campaign across communities identified as being at risk, urging residents to take early warnings seriously and prepare for possible evacuation where necessary.
As part of the preparedness measures, the agency has identified and mapped high grounds and other safe locations that could serve as temporary relocation centres for residents displaced by flooding.
The government urged residents to cooperate with TSEMA officials, traditional and community leaders, while taking steps to reduce flood risks around their homes and communities.
Residents were also advised to clear drainage channels, avoid constructing on waterways and remain prepared to move to government-designated safe areas when directed.
The government further urged residents to give priority to children, elderly persons and people living with disabilities during any evacuation exercise.
TSEMA advised the public to rely only on verified information from the agency and the Taraba State Government to avoid misinformation and panic.
The state government said the ongoing sensitisation campaign and evacuation plans were part of its proactive approach to disaster management and its commitment to protecting residents during the flood season.
Residents are urged to stay alert, heed official warnings and prioritise safety.
