TARABA SEMA INTENSIFIES FLOOD AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ACROSS FLOOD-PRONE COMMUNITIES

By Nformi Desmond

The Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA) has intensified its flood awareness campaign, embarking on a statewide sensitization exercise to educate residents of flood-prone communities on preventive measures ahead of possible flooding during the peak of the rainy season.
The outreach, led by the Director of Administration, Mr. Sani Maisukwati, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of TSEMA, Dr. Echuseh Audu, focused on equipping residents with practical knowledge on flood preparedness, early response, and community resilience.

Addressing households during the campaign, Mr. Maisukwati urged residents to pay close attention to flood early warning alerts issued by relevant authorities and to take immediate action whenever necessary. He advised those living in vulnerable areas to relocate to safer locations before floodwaters rise, stressing that early action remains the most effective way to prevent loss of lives and property.
He also called on communities to desist from dumping refuse in drainage channels and waterways, noting that blocked drainage systems significantly increase the risk of flooding. According to him, maintaining a clean environment and working closely with Local Emergency Management Committees are essential steps in mitigating the impact of disasters.
Mr. Maisukwati reaffirmed the agency's commitment to protecting lives through sustained public enlightenment, adding that disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility requiring the active participation of government, community leaders, and residents.
Community and religious leaders who received the TSEMA delegation applauded the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. They pledged their support in disseminating flood safety messages and mobilizing residents to comply with preventive measures.
The Taraba State Emergency Management Agency says it will continue to expand the sensitization campaign to all identified flood-risk communities across the state while strengthening collaboration with traditional rulers, faith-based organizations, community leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure timely dissemination of disaster risk information and improve emergency preparedness.
