The Taraba State Mobile Court on Environmental Protection, Public Safety and Prohibition of Deforestation has sealed an illegal gold and diamond mining site at Garin Jatau village, a suburb of Iware in Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of the state.
The Mobile Court carried out the operation on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, following intelligence reports that suspected illegal miners, allegedly from Zamfara and Katsina states, had regrouped in the area and installed three engines to facilitate their mining activities.
The activities, according to the authorities, had caused significant environmental degradation in the community.
Three suspects identified as leaders of the illegal mining group were arrested during the operation and subsequently ordered to be remanded in prison custody as a deterrent to others involved in unlawful mining activities.
Residents of Garin Jatau commended the Taraba State Government for its sustained efforts to rid their communities of illegal mining, which they said contributes significantly to insecurity and environmental degradation in the area.
The Mobile Court warned illegal miners operating across the state to immediately desist from their activities, stressing that Executive Order No. 5 of 2023 on Environmental Protection and Executive Order No. 6 of 2026 on the Protection of Host Communities remain in force.
The Court reaffirmed the Taraba State Government’s commitment to protecting the environment, safeguarding host communities and ending illegal mining activities across the state.
It further warned that anyone found violating the relevant laws would face the full consequences, irrespective of their status, position or influence.
