The National Population Commission (NPC) has rolled out a nationwide online registration system that allows Nigerians to apply for birth and death certificates without visiting registration centres, in a move aimed at modernising the country's civil registration process.
The digital platform, known as the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system, provides citizens with a faster and more convenient way to register births and deaths, complete applications, and access official certificates online.
To obtain a birth certificate, applicants are expected to visit the NPC's self-service registration portal, create an account, and complete the online application by providing accurate personal information and other required details. After the application is verified and approved, the certificate becomes available for download.
For adults who require a birth attestation certificate, the commission said applicants must undergo identity verification using their National Identification Number (NIN), where available, upload supporting documents, including a sworn affidavit, and submit the application electronically for processing.
The platform also supports online death registration. Family members or designated informants can notify the commission of a death by completing the required form online. The service is provided at no cost, and applicants receive updates and confirmation through their registered email addresses.
According to the NPC, the digital initiative is expected to reduce delays, improve the integrity of Nigeria's civil registration database, and make it easier for citizens to obtain vital records. The commission encouraged Nigerians to embrace the online service as part of efforts to strengthen identity management and improve access to essential government services.
